I really enjoyed your story of how your life is so very different from your sisters' because although my sister and I were both born in the United States I still feel a huge gap by our ten year age difference and how my life has changed in the time before she was born. I also really enjoyed eating your dish, although I will probably never be able to pronounce it correctly! I think one of the best things about reading or hearing all these memoirs is that you can see how each person has been affected by their culture and heritage and I think you did a great job connecting your "old" culture to your "new" culture. During the fishbowl discussion I like what you said about connecting who we are with how others expect us to be and how people change us but that is not necessarily detrimental. In your fishbowl notes I saw how you analyzed Janie's actions with respect to Jody, and how after he died she was set free as she was no longer next to Jody and she didn't have his reputation to worry about anymore so she was then able to advance throughout her life. Great job and great food!
This was by far my favorite food of this Food Memoir project. Truly amazing. I also loved that in your memoir, you compared the AEbleskiver sticking to the powdered sugar with this dish sticking with your family's culture even though its morphed and changed throughout the years. You also showed your change in culture through this food very well by first talking about the traditions and your Danish culture and then moving into the American culture and losing those Danish traditions, but not your love for AEbleskiver. I also liked you showed your family changing through their actions at the dinner table, where you would normally have family dinner, and now your shifting away from it. I thought that was a great way of implicitly showing the cultural shifts your family made. Throughout the fishbowl, I liked that you kept connecting Their Eyes Were Watching God back to the real world and real situations you experienced.By comparing Janie's growing up process with your sisters and how neither of them changed personalities, you showed you understood Hurston's underlying meaning and subconsciously found connections to it in your life. I also loved the comparison between Michelle Obama probably feeling this pressure to have the perfect family in the same way Janie felt the pressure to be a perfect wife for Joe; then connecting that back to the changes in mainstream society. Overall, I thought you brought a very unique perspective to the fishbowl and your memoir was awesome! Great work!
